PO1.18: Biomechanical Effects of Training on Wheelchair-Commode Transfers

This study aimed to determine if training improved the biomechanics of wheelchair transfers to a commode, from front and side approaches. After transfer training, kinetics and kinematics of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and trunk were calculated and compared to baseline. Forces and moments decreased in nearly all joints of the trailing extremity, which may decrease the risk of injury. Compared to the front, the side approach seemed to benefit more significantly from the training.

Stephanie Rigot is currently pursuing both Doctor of Physical Therapy and PhD in Bioengineering degrees at the University of Pittsburgh. She graduated from the University of Rochester in 2015 with a BS in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomechanics and Minor in Social Psychology. At the Human Engineering Research Laboratories, she is currently studying the effects of skills training on independent wheelchair transfers and techniques for improving motor learning.

Lynn Worobey,is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her doctorate in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh. She has extensive experience in biomechanics and is a certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP). She also holds a clinical doctorate in physical therapy. Her interests include maximizing function for individuals who utilize assistive technology in both a research and clinical setting.
