PS10.1: Changes in EEG Spectra in Response to Power Mobility Training

This multiple-baseline, single-subject A-B-A-B study explored the impact of power mobility training on 3 children ages 4-6 years with multiple, severe disabilities. The Dimensions of Mastery Questionnaire was administered and electroencephalography data was recorded weekly. Additional measures included the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), the Assessment of Learning Power mobility use (ALP), the Wheelchair Skills Checklist (WSC), and a qualitative maternal interview. All participants demonstrated improvements on the COPM, ALP, and WSC.

Dr. Kenyon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Kenyon heads the Grand Valley Power Mobility Project, an inter-professional research project that provides power mobility training for children with multiple, severe disabilities. Dr. Kenyon presents internationally on topics related to pediatric physical therapist practice and has published multiple journal articles and book chapters pertaining to topics in pediatrics.

John Farris, PhD

John Farris is currently a Professor in the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and Chair, Product Design and Manufacturing Department. He earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees at Lehigh University and his Doctorate at the University of Rhode Island. He has 18 years of college engineering teaching experience as well as 3 years of industrial engineering experience. His teaching interests lie in the product design, medical device design and, design for manufacture.

Samhita Rhodes, PhD

Dr. Samhita Rhodes is the Assistant Director of the School of Engineering and Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Program at Grand Valley State University. Dr. Rhodes' expertise is in biomedical signal modeling and advanced image processing techniques, and she is currently working with neurosurgeons at Spectrum Health to accurately model epileptogenesis. Her collaborative work includes quantifying the benefits of power mobility training in children with multiple developmental disorders.

Naomi Aldrich, PhD

Naomi Aldrich joined Grand Valley State University's faculty in 2013 as an Assistant Professor of Psychology after receiving her PhD from The City University of New York. Her research emphasizes the complex relations among perception, emotion, and communicative behaviors in typical and at-risk children. She has had the opportunity to discuss findings with both national and international audiences and has published several articles/book chapters regarding children's development.
