PS2.1: Adapting Commercial Wearable Fitness Technology for Manual Wheelchair Users

The use of fitness wearables has showed positive impacts - people were highly motivated to reach the goals; and later, most people demonstrated long-term behavioral changes and adopted more active lifestyles. Manual wheelchair users (MWUs), who are sedentary, may benefit from this technology. However, most commercial wearables were unsuitable for MWUs as they were designed to track ambulatory movements. This study aimed to develop/evaluate custom algorithms based on ActiGraph GT3X+ to assess PA participation in MWUs.

Kalai Tsang is currently a PhD student in the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also a research associate at the Human Engineering Research Lab in the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Her dissertation focuses on assessment of physical activity participation in manual wheelchair users using wearable sensors.
